Early and substantially, so as to keep well clear: one large, obvious manoeuvre rather than a string of small ones.

Giving way to a vessel crossing from starboard: reduce speed and turn to starboard two or three miles off, not three cables off.
The rule says«Every vessel which is directed to keep out of the way of another vessel shall, so far as possible, take early and substantial action to keep well clear.»
