Part of the convention Lights and shapes
Where it is impracticable to show lights and shapes of the prescribed characteristics or in the prescribed positions, she shows lights and shapes as close to the requirements as possible.
At sea it looks like this
A seaplane has no mast for a masthead light: she shows what she physically can, but she must be conspicuous and must not mislead.
The rule says«Where it is impracticable for a seaplane or a WIG craft to exhibit lights and shapes of the characteristics or in the positions prescribed in the Rules of this Part she shall exhibit lights and shapes as closely similar in characteristics and position as is possible».
